Funding opportunities for research proposals on Microplastics

The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) is offering funding opportunities for research projects on two specific topics: “Microplastic sediment core feasibility study” and “Microplastic biomonitoring in fish: Assessing the feasibility and conducting a pilot field study”. Deadline to send proposals is 20 April 2020.

Request for Proposals: Microplastic biomonitoring in fish – Assessing the feasibility and conducting a pilot field study

The main scope of this project is to determine the feasibility of characterizing, and measuring the quantity of microplastic particles collected from the gastrointestinal tract of an appropriately defined fish species, including its relevance for use as a global biomonitor and understanding of key physiological traits in relation to feeding behavior, and to conduct a pilot field study at a regional scale to assess the feasibility of implementing a scientifically robust sampling and analysis protocol.

The project should start during Spring 2020 with the duration of 1 year. Budget in the order of €80 000.

Request for Proposals: Microplastic sediment core feasibility study

As scope, the project would provide the analysis of Plastic and microplastic particles (MPs) from archived and/or field-collected sediment cores, analysed to assess feasibility of assessing temporal trends related to the accumulation of MPs.  Pilot study to be limited to assessing feasibility regarding implementation of quality assurance and quality control QA/QC protocol and an estimate of sample size required to provide spatial and temporal statistical analysis at the global level. The research proposals should provide specific details in relation to how they intend to collect, store, transport, prepare and analyse samples, including measures to control for background contamination and insight regarding the lower size limit possible for both microplastic particles and fibres. Additionally, the research proposal should also include a statement regarding the number of sediment samples to be included in the pilot study needed to support the assessment and feasibility of expanding the global scale.

The project would also start during Spring 2020 with the duration of 1 year. Budget estimation is €40 000.
